The conference “VALUE. USE. PROPERTY. ON THE SPATIAL DIMENSIONS OF LAND ISSUES“ takes place at the Faculty of Architecture on Friday, October 20th [Foyer Reiffmuseum]
The conference is organized by Franziska Kramer and Uwe Schröder, together with Dasha Kuletskaya and Sabine Brück, RWTH Aachen University, and in collaboration with Susanne Schindler and André Bideau, MAS gta, ETH Zürich.
The interdisciplinary conference aims to investigate on land issues and their spatial dimensions. Speakers and discussants are: Meta Berghauser Pont [Chalmers University of Technology], Sara Stevens [University of British Columbia], Benjamin Davy [TU Dortmund], Florian Hertweck [University of Luxembourg], Ifigenia Dimitrakou [University of Zürich], Elisabetta Fiocchi Malaspina [University of Zürich], Manuel Aalbers [KU Leuven], Thomas Hartmann [TU Dortmund], Gabu Heindl [University of Kassel] and others.
Excerpt from the conference concept: “In the past years, the land issue (German: die Bodenfrage) has received much attention in architecture, because it affects land use in terms of a sustainable and socially equitable future (urban) development, especially in housing. Responding to increasing land prices and rents, for instance in Germany, a discussion about possible solutions and methods to avoid land speculation has evolved. In architecture, the discussion on increasing land prices and rents often addresses housing concepts on common ground, i.e., de-commodified ground withdrawn from the speculative influence of the ‘free market’. Nonetheless, this disciplinary debate is also political in nature. Positions from both ends of the political spectrum contributed to the contemporary debate on land issues, ranging from claims for expropriation and nationalization to manifestos for the automatic regulation of the ‘free market’, a spectrum that has been also the basis in the debate on land issues around at the beginning of the 20th century. Few scholars, however, seek to mediate between these two extremes and promote a balanced approach between three actors: the state, the market, and the commons“
There is no fee for attending the conference and no registration required. In case you need further information please send us an email to: fkramer@raum.arch.rwth-aachen.de
